On 21 July 2019 at 9 pm six gentlemen with wounds on cheeks, noses, foreheads, entered the Kollegienkirche in Salzburg to listen to Orlando di Lasso’s “Lagrime di San Pietro”, performed by the Los Angeles Master Chorale during the Ouverture spirituelle of the Salzburger Festspiele.
This live performance was part of the Appropriate All Emotions cycle which connects to Muntean/Rosenblum’s early photos and video pieces depicting models with superficial wounds, evoking knife slashes in an early state of healing, generated by special effects makeup. Nothing in this performance provided any hint as to the origins of these wounds. A visible wound on the surface of the skin potentially leads to a scar and – literally so – it is a kind of embedded narrative, a story of a prior physical encounter with the material world, an echo of some form of aggression. This is a simple narrative device, physically written on bodies, and one that triggers empathy. Just as hearing a sound immediately unconsciously prompts us to identify its source, the image of a wound triggers unspoken questions regarding the event that might have caused it: an act of appalling violence or a minor everyday accident?
