For the exhibition GRANTED, artist Sandro Kopp used the album The Art Of The Lie by John Grant as a starting point.
Prior to the release of the record, as a private exploration, Kopp created 30 drawings – three for each of the tracks – in response to concentrated listening to the music. He then discussed with John which ones should be taken further into painting.
The result were nine “Singles” 30 by 30 cm oil paintings on panel and one larger 110 by 110 cm oil on linen painting.
The series is an exploration of translation: music into drawing and then highly realistic figurative paintings of completely abstract drawings.
Each painting is presented at EBENSPERGER in the recesses of the Fichtebunker in a room of its own, accompanied by the song that served as the genesis of the painting.
